I am slowed down to a halt by a road worker waving a red flag just a few kilometres from my final destination. It’s in these moments on a dusty road in front of a stop-and-go boom that I begin to ponder if this might be how the magic dies for this whitewashed coastal town.
Apart from velvety, white beaches, pellucid seas and crumbling palaces, Zanzibar also offers some incredible fauna and flora.
Every night, the clear winter skies and ocean meld into a void and the lack of electricity in the village brings the stars close, all around us, like fireflies. Vukani has the best views in Mdumbi as well as a closeness to village life. If you want a local experience or have a tight budget, or if you just want a simple yet comfortable experience, I’d recommend Vukani.
