I had never wanted to jump on a plane right after I got married to head on an overseas honeymoon. I always thought it sounded tiring. Instead, we shot off after the wedding celebrations to commence what was set to be a terrific local “travelmoon”.
Owned by the Taberer family since 1984, the property has recently undergone impressive renovations. Apart from its wines and horses, Avontuur is now also a spectacular wedding and events venue.
We were on the third leg of Ford’s RangeHer Drives with a Mission campaign. It was an interesting dynamic being on an all-female trip like this – especially since it wasn’t a case of cliched spa treatments and champagne brunches.
So far, the backpack has been the ideal size for my travels – 60L of combined packing space from the 40L main bag and 20L add-on daypack.

With sweat dripping down our faces, we catch the bus by a split second. We’re not too sure yet if it is, in fact, the correct bus, but we keep our fingers crossed. I’m trusting that my basic Italiano will not fail us today on this mission.
The sun is bright. In fact, so bright that I struggle to see out of the front window, thanks to the dust of the Ford Rangers in the convoy in front of us. We’re seriously climbing up this mountain over rocks and ridges…
A red Coca Cola-branded water tank, a light blue skedonk with its bonnet buried in the ground, and a signboard that reads “Free Wi-Fi” indicated that this must be it. It’s hard to believe that there’s any form of network connection here so we remained sceptical…
Mauritius was not what I expected. As our bus travelled from Mahebourg to Port Louis, the lush greens and palm trees reminded me of Port Shepstone.
Food is a big part of travel and relationship: once you have shared a local meal with someone in a place other than your hometown, you instantly have a deeper connection.
As the big black entrance gates open and we drive through the lush, tree-lined avenue, we are transported to a different world. This is the heritage of Henry Fancourt White which dates back to the mid-1800s.
